Home Depot Data Breach
On September 8, 2014, Home Depot confirmed a data breach indicating unauthorized access to card information potentially impacting customers who shopped at their U.S. and Canadian stores since April 2014. At this time, there is no evidence that the breach 1) impacted customers who shopped online at HomeDepot.com and 2) compromised debit PIN numbers.
As of September 10, 2014, Michigan Coastal CU has not received a list of potentially affected card numbers. If you are an infrequent Home Depot shopper, please continue to monitor your accounts daily and inform us of any suspicious card activity. If you are a frequent Home Depot shopper and would feel more comfortable cancelling your current debit card and receiving a new one, please contact us at 888.853.6633 or visit any one of our branches for assistance.
Michigan Coastal CU does monitor your card activity with our fraud monitoring system. In breach situations, our scoring system is enhanced to quickly take action to contact you regarding questionable transactions and potentially freezing your card until you confirm whether the transactions are fraudulent. This system will never ask for your card number or your PIN number. Should you receive an automated call, please follow all prompts to either deny or confirm fraudulent transactions. The policy of our payment card brand Visa provide that you have zero liability for any unauthorized charges if you report them in a timely manner.
Home Depot has posted more information about the breach on their website, including the offer of identity protection services that you can view here.

*Mortgage and Visa loans do not qualify.
Of equal importance to credit unions is the change in cardholder liability. The revised rule eliminates the current MasterCard $50 liability limitation that applies if the conditions for zero liability are not met. Under the revised rule, if the conditions for zero liability are not met (not reporting the loss promptly) the Regulation E limitation will apply. Under Regulation E, the cardholder could have up to $500 liability if the loss is not reported within two days of discovery, or unlimited liability of the unauthorized transaction if not reported within 60 days of when the unauthorized transaction was reported on a period statement, thus eliminating the $50 cap.
